Tips on Handling Reported Security Breaches

In the past 18 months, there have been major data security breaches across the U.S., which has resulted in millions of people having their personal and sensitive information stolen. Companies like Target, Home Depot, Sony and Anthem have all been victims of hackers breaching their data.

While American River Bank is not affiliated with any of these companies nor has any additional information on the data breaches, here are some tips to help you stay safe:

Be Vigilant
Utilize Online Banking, Mobile Banking or Access 24 Telephone Banking to monitor your accounts on a daily basis and notify us immediately of any unrecognized activity.

Unauthorized Charges
Call the bank at any time day or night to report unauthorized charges or to report a lost or stolen card. We'll work with you to quickly take care of any unauthorized charges.

Check Your Credit Report
You can get a free credit report once a year from Equifax, Experian and/or TransUnion at www.annualcreditreport.com . Review it to see if there are any unauthorized accounts. Make this an annual habit.

Be Wary of Unusual Emails, Phone Calls and Letters
  • Don’t give your personal information over the phone to unexpected callers.
  • Ignore letters in the mail that claim you won a prize or trip. It’s likely a scam to entice you to contact the listed number and give up personal information.
  • Don’t click on any links in emails from unknown sources or unusual emails from known sources. Clicking a bad link could download viruses that steal account passwords. The same rule applies to links in text messages sent to your phone.
Fraud Monitoring
American River Bank offers FraudWatch® PLUS automatically on all of our debit cards. Our experienced fraud analysts work around the clock, watching for any suspicious card activity and will contact you immediately if they detect potential fraud on your card.
