Protecting Yourself Against Identity Theft

  • Review your statements for accuracy.
  • Shred credit cards, financial statements, receipts, and any documents with sensitive information when discarding.
  • Request a copy of your credit report periodically. Visit the FDIC website for more information on how to annually request a copy.
  • Ensure you are on a secure website when making online purchases. A secure web address will begin with “https:” – the “s” at the end confirms it is secure.
  • Utilize your credit cards when making online purchases to limit your liability.

Be Aware of Phishing

Phishing is a method attackers use to gain access to your personal information, computer, or network. Attackers send you an email or a text message from what seems to be a vendor or entity that you are familiar with asking you to click a link, or have you enter sensitive information (account information, username, password, SSN). Below are additional tips and suggestions to prevent your information from being compromised:

  • These requests will typically pressure you to act immediately to be rewarded or face consequences.
  • Attackers often create fake company logos or email address that look real.
  • Look for grammatical errors-most legitimate companies rarely have these types of errors.
  • Confirm the phone numbers or websites listed in the email are correct.
  • Call the vendor or entity using the phone number you already have or by looking up the phone number to confirm they sent you the email.
